Let’s face it . . . an organization is only as good as its customer service and good customer service comes from employees who are passionate about their organization and about ensuring that every customer is treated right. Norfolk State University created a Customer Service Satisfaction Committee in December 2013. The team consists of individuals from Student Affairs, Athletics, Finance, Human Resources, Enrollment Management, Information Technology, Institutional Research, University Advancement, Faculty and the Office of the President.
The Committee established the Spartan Star Awards in April 2016 in an effort to recognize excellent customer service provided by employees. It oversees the program and handles the award recognition. Employees are nominated by individuals internal and external to the University by submitting an online nomination form. Each quarter, the nominees are reviewed and a Spartan Star of the Quarter is selected. Quarterly winners can fall into three categories including faculty, staff and administrative and professional. The Spartan Star of the Year is selected from among the quarterly winners. Nominees receive certificates and special recognition items during a luncheon or University event. The Spartan Star of the Year also received $500.
The Spartan Star awards are given as immediate recognition for exemplary customer service performance or an event that resulted in a positive impact or benefit to an internal or external client and a positive reflection on the institution.

The Spartan Star of the Year award was presented to Jeremy Faulk of Facilities Management.
