B.S. Middle Education

The Bachelor of Science in Middle Education degree program provides students the opportunity to develop the required knowledge, skills and dispositions to obtain a licensure to teach math and/or science in Grades 6-8. The broad curriculum is embedded with opportunities to develop content knowledge as well as diverse field experiences at the Secondary level. Information on program admittance and graduation requirements, field experiences, state license standards, and passing scores on Praxis and State Assessments are posted on the School of Education's webpage. Students are prepared to meet the Virginia Licensure Regulations for School Personnel and the Council for the Accreditation of Education Preparation (CAEP) Standards and Assessments, including passing the VCLA and Praxis Subject Assessments in Math and/or General Science.

This degree program is an undergraduate option for an initial license in Middle Education with add-on endorsements in Math or Laboratory Science. Teacher candidates will be restricted to teaching in the area listed on the license.

  • A. VDOE Requirements for Mathematics concentration: Coursework in algebra, geometry, probability and statistics, applications of mathematics, and methods of teaching mathematics to include middle school mathematics content (24 semester hours)
    • a. NSU Requirements: MTH 102 Essentials of Algebra, MTH 105 Intermediate Algebra; MTH 141 Elements of Math for Teachers, MTH 142 Elements of Math for Teachers II, MTH 151 College Algebra, MTH 131 Pre-calculus for Business Majors; MTH 132 Calculus for Business Majors; MTH 310 Discrete Math for Teachers; SED 380 Foundations of Secondary School Methods; SPE 345 Teaching Math to Exceptional Learners (30 Semester Hours)
  • B. VDOE Requirements for Laboratory Science concentration: Coursework in each of the following: biology, chemistry, physics, and Earth and space science; and a laboratory course is required in each of the four areas (24 semester hours)​

  5. Foundation of Education (EDU 201 Foundation of Education): 3 hours
  6. Language Acquisition and Reading Development (EED 450 Teaching Literacy in Elementary Schools, EED 490 Diagnostic Reading, and SED 405 Reading in the Content Areas): 6 hours minimum
