Center for Materials Research
The Center for Materials Research (CMR) at Norfolk State University is dedicated to advancing the frontiers of materials science and engineering. CMR supports pioneering research and offers graduate education at both the master’s and doctoral levels. Our researchers explore the fundamental science behind new materials and work to develop innovative solutions to today’s technical challenges. Through hands-on experience with state-of-the-art equipment and labs, CMR students are trained in the synthesis, analysis, and application of advanced materials and devices.
CREQS
The NSF CREST Program (Centers of Research Excellence in Science and Technology) supports the development of research centers that integrate advanced research with education. Norfolk State University established the CREST Center for Research and Education in Quantum-leap Science and Technology (CREQS) to drive innovation in quantum-based technologies and to prepare the next generation of quantum scientists and engineers. CREQS brings together existing research programs at NSU into a unified team focused on three synergistic areas of quantum science.
CSGS
The Consortium for Strategic and Global Studies (CSGS) provides interdisciplinary research and analysis in international relations, foreign policy, national security, military strategy, and international law. CSGS fosters collaboration among scholars, students, and professionals, and serves as a resource for organizations seeking expert insight on global and strategic issues. The Consortium has produced analysis covering over 160 countries and offers valuable research opportunities for students with global interests.
Cybersecurity
Cybersecurity at Norfolk State - Norfolk State University is positioned to be a national leader in cyber related research and education, providing opportunities for students to learn about the theory and practice of Information Assurance and Cybersecurity. The programs address the nation’s growing need for qualified cybersecurity professionals.
Cybersecurity COE
The Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (COE-CS) is a joint initiative with the Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center at Old Dominion University. The center focuses on Cyber Modeling, Simulation, Analysis, and Experimentation (CMSA&E) to improve defense against complex cyber threats. By leveraging advanced simulation tools and big data analytics, the COE-CS enhances situational awareness, supports rapid decision-making, and provides critical training environments that mirror real-world cyber scenarios.
IA-REDI
The Information Assurance Research Education and Development Institute (IA-REDI) is Norfolk State University's NSA/DHS-designated Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education. IA-REDI advances cybersecurity through both education and research, preparing students with the skills needed to meet the nation's growing demand for professionals in information assurance, network security, and cyber defense.
IC-CAE
The Intelligence Community Center for Academic Excellence (IC-CAE) at Norfolk State University was established through a $2.3 million grant from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. The center prepares students for careers in national security and intelligence by developing critical leadership and analytical skills. IC-CAE offers access to exclusive career events, internships, and networking opportunities with U.S. intelligence agencies, helping students launch meaningful careers in service to the nation.
Innovation Center
The NSU Innovation Center (NSUIC) provides entrepreneurship and innovation support to both the university and the broader community. Through workshops, mentorship, and business development resources, the center empowers individuals to turn ideas into viable ventures. NSUIC is dedicated to making Norfolk State University a catalyst for economic growth and community transformation. By fostering a culture of disciplined entrepreneurship, the center helps build sustainable businesses, encourages creative problem-solving, and strengthens the regional economy through innovation and collaboration.
NSF Scene Center
The Southeastern Coalition for Engagement and Exchange in Nanotechnology Education (The SCENE) is a National Science Foundation–funded Louis Stokes Regional Center of Excellence. Led by Norfolk State University, The SCENE supports education and workforce pathways in nanotechnology through a strong network of academic and research partners. With a focus on expanding access and opportunity, The SCENE delivers training, instructional materials, and outreach programs that prepare diverse students for careers in nanoscience and engineering.
Roberts Center
The Joseph Jenkins Roberts Center at Norfolk State University is a center of excellence for the study of the African Diaspora. Founded by Dr. Cassandra Newby-Alexander and the Department of History, the center hosts academic and public history events highlighting key moments in African and African American history. Directed by Drs. Stephanie Richmond and Patrick Mbajekwe, the center supports scholarly research and outreach exploring the global migration, culture, and contributions of African peoples throughout history.
