Department of Biology

Krishnan Prabhakaran, Biology Assistant Professor, presented at the Society for Neuroscience in Washington DC on November 13th. The presentation was entitled ‘Molecular Signaling Pathway in Manganese induced Neurotoxicity’.

Maureen Scott, Biology Instructor, attended 2023 the National Association of African American Honors Programs Conference in Baton Rouge, La, Novemeber1-4,2023 hosted by Southern University. Mrs. Scott served as Judge for Oratorical Presentations. Mrs. Scott is a member of the Board of Directors of the Association of Collège Honor Society and contributed to the Round Table of Honor Programs Deans and Directors discussion of the importance of having certified honor societies on their campuses and Honor Colleges.

Dr. Ashley Haines and Mrs.  Maureen Scott, Biology Department, attended and served as conference Judges and Mentors to 12 STEM Norfolk Students presenting research at the 2023 Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minoritized Scientists (ABRCMS) Pheonix Arizonia November 14-19, 2023. The students presenting research were,  Montaja McMullen-Crockett, Leah Butler, Jaylah Simpkins, Indigo Petterson, Makayla Pinckney, K’mya Saddler, Wilbert Doswell, Anius Prince, Alisia Nolasco, Tyler Fordham, Jocellyn Banks and Alexandra Mikhail.

Department of Computer Science

Dr. D’Nita Andrews Graham, Assistant Professor of Computer Science with Norfolk State University article titled "Inquiring Minds Want to Know what HBCU Students Say About a STEM Master Course Model,” was published in Springer, Intelligent Computing Book, Volume 711 of the Lecture Notes in Networks and Systems.

Cheryl Hinds, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Computer Science received a two-year National Center of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity (NCAE-C) grant award from the Department of Defense (DoD) in the amount of $175,000. This award provides scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students who are transitioning to Cybersecurity. Each selected student will be awarded scholarship funds of $5,000 and will be required to participate in student development activities geared at preparing them for the cybersecurity workforce.  Through this award, NSU is part of a coalition of 8 Institutions of Higher Education that have received this funding.

Department of Engineering Technology

Carray Banks to be on With Good Reason

photo of carray banksCarray Banks, associate professor of technology and faculty athletics representative, will be on the public radio show With Good Reason. Banks will be a guest on the episode airing Saturday, Dec. 2-Friday, Dec. 8. 

He will discuss his mission to generate funding to field both women's and men's golf teams at all HBCUs in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

Department of Nursing and Allied Health

Congratulations to Ms. Sandra J.Olanitori, Nursing Advisor and Recruiter, is featured in the November issue of Virginia Nurses Today (page 15)!

Ms. Olanitori is a member of the Virginia Nurses Association and a representative on the Nurses on Boards Coalition. She provided her words of wisdom and expertise for the VNT about the importance of nurses serving on boards to lend credibility and validity to the work of organizations.

She includes her "3 Ps" which are:

  1. Performance - Your performance speaks for you. Let it be 100% or greater. Never stop learning or wanting to learn! 
  2. Persistence - Keep pushing no matter what the odds are. Never let anyone tell you what your value or worth is. You should always look at your worth 100% or greater. 
  3. Preparation - Always be prepared, never stop reading, learning, being creative and innovative!
