Energy
Conserving energy through efficient systems, demand management, and utilizing alternative solutions are core objectives of Norfolk State University. Major advanced energy storage systems (Fuel cells) and solar power arrays integrated on campus buildings not only generate clean electricity but provide hands-on opportunities for students and researchers to directly study working advanced energy storage systems and PV (photovoltaic) system installations. We also will integrate open protocol for Energy Management and Information System (Fault Detection Devices and BAS), digital twin platform, energy efficiency for data center and labs collects data from energy utility systems all over campus. By utilizing data analysis, it provides insights to help us maximize efficiencies, reduce costs, and make a positive impact on energy planning and consumption.

National Energy Awareness Month - October
October is National Energy Awareness Month, our annual national effort to increase attention to energy use, and to develop energy efficient behaviors that will continue throughout the year at Norfolk State University. A time to raise awareness of the critical role energy plays to drive behavior change only to encourage smart energy use from “SMART Technology”.
The Department of Energy & Sustainability wants to commemorate National Energy Awareness Month by introducing “SMART Technology” to our campus. A smart building is a structure rooted in emerging advanced technology like IoT (Internet of Things) sensors , AI (Artificial Intelligence), and Machine Learning technology that is indented into hardware, software, and connectivity to optimize the buildings or campus enegry performance. All of this is not possible without devices that can communicate, devices that have controls and variable modes or settings, that are SMART flexible and responsive!
We at the Department of Energy & Sustainability is encouraging the smart use of energy, water, and transportation resources by looking for ways to save energy and other resources. Every effort counts small changes daily on our NSU campus leads to substantial savings when multiplied across Norfolk State University.
