Larneil Gravely Vaughter is a proud alumna of Norfolk State University whose distinguished career reflects resilience, leadership, and a lifelong commitment to service. A native of rural Southwestern Virginia, her transition to the urban academic environment at Norfolk State marked a transformative cultural and educational experience. There, she found a supportive and compassionate community of faculty that helped shape both her academic journey and personal growth.
Her early achievements include participating in the Junior Miss Pageant and earning distinction as the first Miss Black Martinsville, followed by placement in the 1970 Miss Black Virginia Pageant in Norfolk. These formative experiences helped prepare her for success both at Norfolk State and throughout her life.
During her undergraduate years, she actively engaged in campus life, strengthening her leadership and service foundation through her membership in the Epsilon Theta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. Initiated in her sophomore year, her involvement in the sorority, spanning over 54 years has played a pivotal role in building her confidence, expanding her social engagement, and deepening her commitment to community service.
Mrs. Vaughter earned her Bachelor of Social Work from Norfolk State University in 1974 and later returned to pursue graduate studies. In 1977, she made history as a member of the University’s first graduating class of the Master of Social Work program.
Her career in social work spans several decades and includes a range of impactful roles. She served as a clinician, clinical supervisor, and manager of mental health and substance abuse programs, while also contributing to program development and clinical leadership. In addition, she maintained a successful solo private practice for many years. Throughout her career, she navigated and overcame professional barriers with confidence, drawing strength from the solid educational foundation she received at Norfolk State.
Currently, Ms. Vaughter is a member of the Central Virginia Chapter of the Norfolk State University Alumni Association and the Chesterfield Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.
Additionally, her professional credentials include membership in the Academy of Certified Social Workers (ACSW), licensure as a Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), and designation as a Board-Certified Diplomate in Clinical Social Work (BCD). Following her retirement from social work, she continues her commitment to service as a partner in her family-owned business, Capital Driver Rehabilitation Consultants, LLC.
A passionate advocate for education and professional development, she encourages students to explore their career interests thoroughly, seek mentorship from professionals, and pursue advanced credentials. She emphasizes the value of lifelong learning and the importance of certifications such as ACSW, LCSW, PhD, and BCD in expanding opportunities and maximizing professional impact.
Her legacy is defined by perseverance, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to uplifting individuals and communities through the field of social work.
