M.A. Counseling Education
Mission Statement
The Master of Arts in Counseling Education Program, in support of the mission of Norfolk State University, empowers our graduates to serve the needs of diverse communities as ethical, knowledgeable, and skilled professional counselors. The program promotes a learning environment rich in appreciation for advocacy, diversity, inclusiveness, and accessibility by fostering the academic, professional, and personal development of our students. The department focuses on those educational issues germane to global counselor identity which aligns with the mission of the School of Education’s goal to develop collaborative, compassionate, competent and knowledgeable leaders through rigorous and relevant coursework, empirical-based research opportunities, and exposure to professional development opportunities.
Admission Requirements
- An undergraduate degree from an accredited institution
- Complete and submit a NSU online graduate school application along with full payment of application fee
- A minimum undergraduate or graduate degree cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 (undergraduate) or 3.0 (graduate) as well as be in good academic standing (i.e. Disposition, Professionalism, and Grades) with your previous institution/program of study
- Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
- Three letters of recommendation from faculty or employers familiar with the applicant's academic and professional background
- A personal statement of the applicant’s professional interests and goals
- Resume
- Admissions Interview with Counseling Faculty once a completed application has been submitted to the Office of Graduate Studies (You will be contacted by the department to set up an interview)
*PLEASE NOTE: If a completed application for admission has not been submitted to the Office of Graduate Studies by October 15 (Spring Admissions) and April 15 (Fall Admissions) you will not be eligible for an admissions interview
