SPECTRUM Learning Community

A First-Year Learning Community

About
The Spectrum Learning Community (LC) is designed to provide a welcoming and inclusive space where students who identify as gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, or who do not fit into the gender binary, and their allies as they matriculate the first year of college. Spectrum is committed to creating a community that is safe and affirming, promotes advocacy, and provides opportunities for students to engage in social justice programs that impact the LGBTQIA+ community. Students within our LC will enjoy the benefits of living in a community that connects the theory they learn in the classroom with intentional programs, education, community-led projects and activities, and conversations and opportunities for student involvement.

Spectrum Learning Community Goals:

  • Build a caring and connected community among LGBTQIA+ students and allies to foster a greater sense of belonging.
  • Provide LC students with opportunities to learn about the development of their own multidimensional identities and assist with tools to help them navigate experiences. LGBTQIA+ college students often face so they can persist to graduation.
  • Connect LC students with resources that promote academic success and personal wellness.
  • Provide intentional opportunities for increased student engagement, appreciation of diversity, inclusion, and belonging for LC students.
  • Increase connectedness and student pride to the institution.
