Our Mission

Mission

The mission of the University Compliance Office (UCO) is to enhance a culture of compliance and ethics and to assist Norfolk State University (NSU) in carrying out its academic mission and administrative, athletic, student engagement and research activities with integrity and in accordance with the University’s legal, regulatory and ethical responsibilities.  In an increasingly complex regulatory environment, the University Compliance Office (UCO) is responsible for the design, implementation and maintenance of a compliance and ethics program that supports NSU's mission and promotes the highest ethical standards by members of the NSU community.

The University Compliance Office will fulfill its mission by:

  • Providing an effective forum for the NSU community to discuss compliance issues in a practical way, to share experiences, and learn about effective compliance practices by conducting compliance outreach and education.
  • Ensuring compliance is integrated into University policies and procedures.
  • Creating a responsive and nonpunitive process to raise compliance issues.
  • Developing NSU internal compliance partners who are dedicated and leveraged to enhance a culture of compliance and ethics.
  • Strengthening compliance through partnerships with accountable responsible individuals and units.
  • Actively minimizing our administrative burden of compliance through integrated and streamlined operational workflows.
  • Effectively managing compliance risks associated with emerging regulations.
  • Regularly advising and informing NSU leadership and the Board of Visitors regarding University compliance readiness, compliance risk assessments and compliance responsibilities.
  • Exercising due diligence with respect to NSU’s efforts to establish compliance standards.
  • Building trust with NSU constituents.
