Mission

Norfolk State University recognizes that a clean energy future does not have to come at the cost of a healthy, resilient, and growing economy. We first must embrace a measure of humility as to our ability to project and predict 30 years of energy and sustainability demands and technological innovation. Norfolk State University Energy and Sustainability program will take advantage of addressing goals to improve resiliency, optimize demand, reduce consumption resulting in advanced energy savings, environmental stewardship, and innovation. Ultimately providing a path toward establishing Norfolk State University as a leader in equitable, economic, energy, environmental sustainability for HBCU’s and the Campus of the 21st Century and Beyond!

Goals And Objectives

  • University Operations – The universities must play a leadership role in bringing environmental concerns to the attention of the public and serve as an institutional model for developing policies and practices that promote energy and sustainability.
  • Climate Commitment – Will provide a guide for developing priorities in energy and sustainability and to pursue climate reduction action leadership and goals on campus and throughout the region through partnerships, policy, investment, and carbon emission reduction initiatives.
  • Culture and Organization - Foster a culture of environmental stewardship and social equity on campus promoting behavioral changes, enacting university policies, and organizational structures initiating projects in the areas of transportation, energy consumption, water use, recycling, and solid waste removal.
  • Energy Efficiency - Conserving energy through efficient systems, demand management, and utilizing alternative solutions are core objectives of Norfolk State University. By utilizing data analysis, make a positive impact on energy planning and consumption.
  • Leading Energy and Sustainability Research - Demonstrate global leadership in transdisciplinary energy and sustainability research to help achieve the American College and University "Presidents' Climate Leadership Commitments Second Nature.
  • Education for Energy & Sustainable Development - Produce graduates who are committed to making a positive difference in their communities, their organizations, and the world.
  • Smart Living Learning Lab - Leverage our campus as a “living smart learning lab” and testbed for energy and sustainability solutions and technologies in action.
  • Smart Innovation Technology Lab - Support the efforts to assist and allow students to houses tools and space for students to work independently and collaboratively for classwork, stem competitions, and learning from any discipline while developing, utilizing their degree program to start and own their own tech business.

  • Energy and Sustainability involves conserving, protecting, and sustaining resources to create healthy, high-performing facilities. It brings real-world challenges and solutions into the classroom while fostering community engagement to address climate change.
  • Key areas of focus include waste management, recycling, energy and water consumption, and efficiency initiatives across Norfolk State University.
  • Energy and Sustainability are essential to achieving goals in efficiency, resilience, reliability, economic stability, environmental health, and social equity.
  • On campus, this means designing and implementing efficient, eco-friendly, and socially just systems that support both current and future generations.
  • To position NSU as a leader in Energy and Sustainability, continuous funding is crucial to maintain and improve sustainable practices.
