Agoge Week

Welcome to Norfolk State University

Every Spartan who is worthy of entering into Norfolk State University, must go through the mighty Agoge Week! This is a week of academic events and traditions that are designed to help freshmen become better prepared with campus and network with other Spartans. We'll have knowledgeable current students, faculty, and professional staff here to greet and welcome you, so we know you'll feel at home from the first moment you arrive.

HISTORY OF AGOG

In ancient Sparta, the agoge was required to properly train a Spartan into becoming a true and complete warrior. Agoge comes from the Greek language and means education or training. Agoge aims to enrich and perfect the entire human being. It is the development of the mind and the molding of the character. Virtue, excellence, honor, beauty, and heroism are some of the aspects involved with the pursuit of education. They are achieved by good teaching and proper example. In ancient Sparta, girls and boys were required to enter training at the age of seven. The agoge could last a few days for some, and months for others depending on how they proved themselves in training. Skill is a prerequisite. Acceptance into the agoge means you already have the potential to be great; the agoge will simply temper you into the total warrior
