Norfolk State University recently hosted the Ethics in Action Summit, welcoming students, faculty, practitioners, and community partners from across the region. Hosted by the Ethelyn R. Strong School of Social Work Field Education Office with strong support from faculty, the event created a powerful and engaging space focused on advancing ethical decision-making in social work practice.
Centered on the theme of Ethics in Action, the summit moved beyond theory and into real-world application. Participants engaged in interactive case simulations, dynamic panel discussions, and collaborative learning experiences designed to challenge perspectives and strengthen ethical reasoning across micro, mezzo, and macro levels of practice.
The summit featured exceptional keynote speakers, Dr. Yvonne Chase, President, National Association of Social Workers, Dr. Cora Jackson, Walden University whose insights set the tone for a day of reflection, critical thinking, and professional growth. Each component of the summit offered valuable, practice-based learning, equipping attendees with tools to navigate complex ethical dilemmas that often test both professional judgment and personal values.
Participants emphasized the impact of the experience, with one attendee sharing, “The entire opportunity to be in the room and learn from other professionals was invaluable.” Others highlighted the importance of engaging in case scenarios, collaborating with colleagues, and gaining knowledge on navigating ethical challenges in real time.
Through meaningful dialogue and active participation, the summit fostered a space for connection, reflection, and growth, reinforcing the importance of ethical, equitable, and culturally responsive practice.
By hosting this summit, Norfolk State University reaffirmed its commitment to preparing social work professionals who lead with integrity, accountability, and purpose. The university looks forward to hosting the Ethics in Summit again next year, continuing to strengthen ethical practice and professional excellence across the field.
