Processes

The financial aid process begins with completing of the Federal Application for Student Financial Aid (FAFSA). The results of the FAFSA provides the Financial Aid Office with information to determine student eligibility for various award types. Students are awarded based on eligibility requirements and the availability of funds at the time of awarding. It is important that students complete the FAFSA and provide accurate information. Providing incorrect information or missing information may result in a delay in awarding of financial aid.

Documentation Process

Forms Review and Requirements: Once the Financial Aid Office receives electronic results from the FAFSA, students may be required to submit additional documentation to complete the financial process. For students who are selected for a process called "verification" by the U.S. Department of Education, it is important to submit all requested documents to the Financial Aid Office.

To achieve timely processing of the information:

  • Include the student's name and NSU student ID number on each page of the document.
  • If more than one (1) family member is applying for financial aid, all names and NSU student ID numbers should be placed on each document. Submit one (1) set of documents for each family member.
  • Documents should be for the requested award year.
  • If requested, submit a signed copy of the federal income tax. Do not submit a state tax form.
  • All documents must be signed where appropriate.
  • All documents should be legible. Photographed copies of documentation is not an acceptable format for documentation.

Receipt of Your Documents The documentation process is divided according to the alphabet of the student's last name. To check the status of your documents, login to your MyNSU account.

Verification Process

The U.S. Department of Education may select students for the verification selection process. Students selected for the verification process are required to submit requested documentation. The purpose of the verification process is to confirm information on the FAFSA results or to correct data that was erroneously entered.

Status: Once all documents have been received, corrections to the FAFSA results may be required. Corrections made to a student's FAFSA are resubmitted to the U.S. Department of Education electronically by Financial Aid.  The U.S. Department of Education will acknowledge receipt of the corrections and return to the Institution an updated FAFSA transaction. Students are awarded upon receipt of the updated FAFSA. Students are encouraged to check their MyNSU account regularly to view updates statuses of the financial aid process

Students financial aid records are processed for awarding once all documents have been received by Financial Aid.
