Center for Materials Research and Engineering Department

Jacob Strimaitis, a Ph.D. student at the Center for Materials Research and a CREST CREAM scholar, advisor Dr. Messaoud Bahoura, presented his research titled " Novel Integration of Graphene-based Ceramics for Enhanced Supercapacitor Energy Storage", at the EMA2023 is an international conference, Orlando, Florida, January 17–20, 2023.

Jacob won the prize for the best poster student presentation at this conference!

EMA 2023 is designed for scientists, engineers, technologists, and students interested in basic science, engineering, and applications of electroceramic materials. Participants from across the world in academia, industry, and national laboratories exchange information and ideas on the latest developments in theory, experimental investigation, and applications of electroceramic materials.

Mr. Brandon Walker, a Ph.D. student in the Materials Science and Engineering Ph.D. program at the Center for Materials Research (advisor Dr. Sam Sun), successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation “Holey Graphene-Enabled Electrode Architectures for Advanced Batteries” on December 1, 2022.

Ms. Latonya Waller, an M.S. student in the materials science master program at the Center for Materials Research (advisor Dr. Sam Sun), successfully defended her MS Thesis “Studies of FET Mobility Versus Iodine Doping of P3HT” on December 9, 2022.

Ms. Ashleigh Wilson, an M.S. student in the materials science master program at the Center for Materials Research (advisor Dr. Natalia Noginova), successfully defended her MS Thesis “Exploring electrochemical reactions in plasmonic environments” on December 12, 2022.

Mr. Md Golam Rabbani Chowdhury, a Ph.D. student in the Materials Science and Engineering Ph.D. program at the Center for Materials Research (advisor Dr. Noginov) published a paper titled "Anomalous dips in reflection spectra of optical polymers deposited on plasmonic metals" in Nanophotonics 2023.

Department of Biology

Rajeev Chandra, Assistant Professor for Biology, Norfolk State University presented his research on ' Ovarian Folliculogenesis in the Domestic Cat' at 3rd International Conference 'World Education and Science Summit-Challenges and Prospects-2022 held at Rishikesh, INDIA from 26 -27 November 2022. The research is being carried out by Dr. Chandra and his research students at the Department of Biology of Norfolk State University in research collaboration with the Departments of Physiological Sciences and Anatomy, Eastern Virginia Medical School, Norfolk, VA. The research aims to understand the underlying mechanism of ovarian folliculogenesis, elucidating the role of steroids and other factors involved in controlling  folliculogenesis. The information generated will help understanding the role of hormones within the follicular fluid, as well as how they are altered in disorders which increase ovarian cancer risk, will enhance our ability to assess risk and develop preventative strategies. Students involved in this research will be learning modern analytical laboratory techniques in the understanding of Reproductive Physiology.

Rajeev Chandra, Assistant Professor for Biology, Jocellyn Banks, an undergraduate junior in the Department of Biology presented a poster titled 'Studies on the stages of Ovarian Follicular development in the Domestic Cat' at ABRCMS-2022 (Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minoritized Students) held at Anaheim, CA from November 9-11, 2022. The research was carried out by the Department of Biology, Norfolk State University in collaboration with Eastern Virginia Medical School under the research mentorship of Dr. Rajeev Chandra, Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology, Norfolk State University.

Rajeev Chandra, Assistant Professor for Biology, Jocellyn Banks, an undergraduate junior in the Department of Biology presented a poster titled 'Studies on the stages of Ovarian Follicular development in the Domestic Cat' at the Twenty Fourth Annual Student Research Poster Session organized by The Scientific Research Society (Tidewater Virginia Chapter) in partnership with Hampton Roads Section of Americal Chemical Society held at Christopher Newport University, Newport news, VA on November 18, 2022. The research was carried out by the Department of Biology, Norfolk State University in collaboration with Eastern Virginia Medical School under the research mentorship of Dr. Rajeev Chandra, Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology, Norfolk State University.
