Last semester, a group of Norfolk State fashion students visited New York City. Under the guidance of Fine Arts Associate Professor Christy Frederick, students gained exposure to the fashion industry and professionals.
The three-day trip included a visit to M&S Schmalberg Flowers, a family-owned business specializing in fabric flowers since 1916. The current owner, Adam Brand, gave the students a personal tour of the factory and showroom. The students were able to film the production process and purchase products. Brand also discussed the company's internship program and how NSU students could apply and order products at a discounted rate.
Students next met with Sean Williams, a sneaker industry specialist and consultant to Adidas, Puma and Nike, and members of the Accessory Council. "Mr. Williams discussed the need for more people of color in creative and decision-making positions at major sneaker companies," states Professor Frederick. "He wants to work directly with the students at Norfolk State University to provide knowledge and internships in the sneaker and accessory industries." During their time with Williams, students examined the collector's edition sneakers he told the story behind each product.
The final meeting of the trip consisted of a portfolio review session with Eji Benson, CEO of ENNUI New York design company. Benson discussed his company's role in offering design, development, sourcing and manufacturing services to large fashion brands such as Cynthia Rowley and Chanel. He is also working to partner with our fashion program at Norfolk State to place our students in internships with design houses in New York City.
During the final day of the trip, the students visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art to explore the Super Fine: Exploring Black Style exhibit. "This was a feast for the eyes as well as a history lesson on the contribution of Africans and African Americans to the world of style, fashion and beauty," reflects Frederick.
