Bio: Dr. T.C.A. Achintya is a historian of legal history in the British Empire. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in 2025. He has also received an M.Phil. in History from the University of Delhi, M.A. degrees from UVA and the University of Delhi, and a B.A. with Honours from the Delhi College of Arts and Commerce.
Before joining NSU, he served as a postdoctoral lecturer in UVA’s Engagements Program, which is part of its General Education Curriculum. In his time at UVA, he served in a variety of organizations. As a member of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Council and the Postdoctoral Association, he advocated for graduate students' and postdocs' interests at the University. He was the inaugural graduate director of the Islamic Worlds Initiative, a member of the Global Legal History Forum, a graduate consultant with UVA’s Center for Teaching and Excellence, and a graduate representative to the UVA Honor Committee.
Dr. Achintya’s research examines how competition and conflict among legal professionals shapes law. Through his work, he traces how Indian practitioners overcame racial hostility and exclusion under colonial rule, pushing their way into the legal system and making it their own. Demonstrating the importance of everyday law in shaping systems, it describes how Indian lawyers and law officers transformed colonial law from below. They made colonial authorities dependent on them even as they built a culture of resistance and resilience that laid the foundations for modern anticolonialism.
For his scholarship and service, he was elected to the Raven Society, UVA’s oldest honor society, and received the Raven Award, its highest honor. He has also been a Jefferson Fellow with the Jefferson Scholars Foundation, a David Seipp Fellow in English Legal History, and a James Whitman/Yale Law School Fellow with the American Society for Legal History. He also received the inaugural Joseph Francis Kett Teaching Award from UVA's Corcoran Department of History.
Outside his academic work, Achintya enjoys history and science fiction, video games, building LEGO sets with his wife, and being taken on walks by his dog, Samwell.
