What is Social Work?

According to the National Association of Social Work, social work is “a profession devoted to helping people function the best they can in their environment.”

The Role of the Social Worker

Social workers are vital professionals who help individuals, families, and communities navigate life’s challenges and improve their well-being. Grounded in values of compassion, justice, and empowerment, social workers serve in a wide range of settings, including:

  • Schools and universities

  • Hospitals and healthcare systems

  • Mental health and substance use treatment centers

  • Child welfare and family services

  • Criminal justice and reentry programs

  • Community development and policy advocacy

Social workers assess needs, connect people to resources, provide counseling and support, and advocate for systemic change. Whether working one-on-one or at the policy level, social workers are committed to dismantling barriers and promoting equity

The Future of Social Work

The field of social work is rapidly evolving to meet the needs of a changing world. Several key trends are shaping the future of the profession:

  • Technology & Innovation: Telehealth, digital case management, and AI tools are transforming how services are delivered.
