Black Prometheus: The Legacy of Jacob Lawrence and the Global Modernist Art of the Mid-Twentieth Century

Oct. 21 - Nov. 23, 2022
Opening Reception: Oct 21 (6-9 PM)

Lifted by Debra Frederick

This exhibition will feature artworks inspired by the work of Jacob Lawrence, the Mbari Artists & Writers Club, and modernist artists from around the world, who sought to move beyond the Western and Eurocentric artistic emphasis by integrating diverse cultures from around the world, blending styles and traditions. As such, the artists included in Black Prometheus represent the rapid change, influence of post-colonialism, and increased globalization of the modern world by exploring the styles, sociopolitical issues, cultural identities, and art practices during the mid-twentieth century.
