For Captain Desmond Walker, U.S. Navy, returning to Norfolk State University was about more than celebrating a career milestone. It was a homecoming.
Walker, a native of Mississippi, earned his Bachelor of Science in Electronics Technology in 2005. More than two decades later, he returned to the university’s campus to receive his promotion to captain—surrounded by family, friends, fellow service members and the NSU community.
His journey from NSU student to Navy captain has included commanding a guided-missile destroyer, leading critical nuclear operations, serving on the personal staff of the Chief of Naval Operations and earning two master’s degrees.
Walker took a moment to recognize NSU President Dr. Javaune Adams-Gaston for her leadership and commitment to students.

“Your leadership has taken Norfolk State to levels never seen for historically Black colleges and universities,” Walker said. He also praised her continued support for the ROTC program and her focus on student success, access, affordability, opportunity and growth.
For Walker, the decision to hold his promotion ceremony at NSU came directly from a connection with a current student. While deployed in the Red Sea, Walker received a direct message on social media from an NSU student, Midshipman 2/C Isaiah Harrington, who asked if he would consider holding his promotion ceremony at the university.
The Norfolk State University Navy ROTC Bravo Company also played an important role in making the ceremony special. The unit’s midshipmen served as side boys for the official party, escorted guests to their seats and participated in the ceremony’s color guard. Led by Lt. Jonathan Mitchell, Bravo Company consists of 19 midshipmen—three seniors, three juniors, five sophomores and eight freshmen.
Walker’s journey from NSU student to Navy captain offered a powerful example of what can happen when education, mentorship, perseverance and opportunity intersect, inspiring the next generation of Naval officers to follow in his footsteps.
