Norfolk State University Renews Partnership with U.S. Coast Guard

Norfolk State University Interim President Melvin T. Stith, Jr., Ph.D., will meet with Vice Admiral Scott Buschman, Commander, Coast Guard Atlantic Area and Coast Guard representatives on Friday, March 22, 2019 to renew a formal memorandum of agreement to continue the partnership between the two entities as part of the military organization’s College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative (CSPI) program.

Serving as the Executive Champion, Vice Admiral Buschman noted the Coast Guard CSPI program not only provides opportunities to receive a funded education with a salary but recent updates to the program allow him to select a student from NSU for the CSPI scholarship. This joint initiative with NSU will serve as a key component in building and supporting a diverse, mission-ready Coast Guard workforce.

The signing will take place at 10 a.m. at the Harrison B. Wilson Hall Administration Building on campus. CSPI is a Coast Guard scholarship program established in 1989 to improve the diversity of its officer corps. The initial partnership between NSU and the Coast Guard rejuvenated in 2017. Several Coast Guard officers will participate during the signing.

Wayne Ivey, NSU’s director of military services and veterans affairs, said NSU will help to promote the Coast Guard and share opportunities the military branch offers to students. Ivey said like NSU’s Army and Navy ROTC branches, the Coast Guard offers student scholarships, training and other related benefits to prospective applicants. Ivey said the university has several alumni who have completed the program.
