Dean’s Welcome
Welcome to the Ethelyn R. Strong School of Social Work at Norfolk State University!
It is my distinct honor to serve as Dean of a school with such a proud and purposeful legacy. For more than six decades, our School has stood as a beacon of excellence in social work education, advocacy, and community engagement. Founded in 1960 by the trailblazing Dr. Ethelyn R. Strong, our School was built on a foundation of service to children, youth, and families—especially those navigating the challenges of marginalization and systemic inequality.
Today, we carry forward that legacy with unwavering commitment. Our mission is deeply rooted in the core values of ethics, empowerment, social justice, and the dignity and rights of all people. These principles are not just words—they are the driving force behind our academic programs, our community partnerships, and the transformative work of our students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
As you explore our website, I invite you to discover the vibrant energy that defines our School. From groundbreaking research and innovative teaching to hands-on service in communities across Virginia and beyond, the Ethelyn R. Strong School of Social Work is a place where passion meets purpose.
Whether you are a prospective student, a returning alum, a community partner, or a curious visitor, I welcome you to join us in our mission. Together, we are shaping a more just and compassionate world—one social worker at a time.
We are Spartan Strong!
Warm regards,

Isiah Marshall Jr., Ph.D.
