Norfolk State University held a scholarship dinner during Founders Week for scholarship recipients, donors, faculty and staff. The event advocates empowering students through scholarships and often introduces scholarship recipients to their donors.
Clifford Porter, NSU Vice President for University Advancement, emphasized the profound impact of scholarship investment on empowering students at Norfolk State University.
“Scholarships serve as more than just a means to remove a financial barrier for students; they act as a message of belief and validation from the NSU community, signaling that the institution is invested in the students' potential to change the world,’ he stated.
Norfolk State President Dr. Javaune Adams-Gaston expressed her gratitude to the donors. “Scholarships help students close financial gaps and pursue their academic ambitions,” she said. “The support given by donors creates a cycle where successful students eventually pour into the next generation of Spartans. With these investments, they provide a pathway to prosperous careers and ensure a world-class education remains accessible.”
Various students received scholarships from different departments at Norfolk State University, sponsored by generous donors. Shawna Turner ‘27, a recipient of the Dr. Carla T. Jones Endowed Scholarship, shared her academic journey and how she shifted her focus from nursing to healthcare administration.
Naveah Porter, also a scholarship recipient, shared what her scholarship means to her.
"The Eric K. Wilson Memorial Endowed and the Larnell B. Exum and Tina Exum Endowed Scholarships allowed me to have a greater focus on academic excellence and campus involvement by removing the financial burden. The funds enable me to pursue various endeavors without a constant need to secure funding,” she reflected.
