What is a public service announcement (PSA) and how do I get one on WNSB?
- A Public Service Announcement (PSA) is a short message that shares beneficial information with the community. It's usually about health, safety, community events, and/or public services. PSA requests are usually from non-profits, government agencies, and/or local groups.
- At WNSB, PSAs are a part of how we serve the community. The PSAs we air are listed in our quarterly FCC report to show the kind of community support we provide.
- Organizations may submit their requests with all pertinent information to tbjones@nsu.edu at least 2–3 weeks in advance. All submissions are reviewed, vetted, and air at the station’s discretion based on audience relevance and available inventory. On average, a PSA may air for 7-10 days. PSAs are free of charge but may be preempted.
Can I advertise on WNSB for my event?
- Several factors help determine how we can assist with an event promotion and/or underwriting campaign. Is the event free or ticketed, whether it is being presented by a non-profit or for-profit organization, whether proceeds benefit a charitable cause, etc.
- Once we have those details, we can better determine the type of support that may best fit.
Why does WNSB do a Membership drive?
- As a public radio station, WNSB conducts membership drives to support and invest directly in Norfolk State University students pursuing careers in broadcasting, journalism, media production, and communications.
- Unlike commercial stations that rely primarily on traditional advertising revenue, public radio stations depend on listener support, community partnerships, and sponsors. Funds raised through our membership drives are used to provide financial assistance and hands-on learning opportunities for students.
- While grants, state funding, and university support help sustain station operations, membership support allows us to go above and beyond operating expenses and make a direct investment in our students.
University Police
Do we have an Emergency Management Team?
If so, what are the team’s overall responsibilities?
- Attached are the CEMP and COOP documents, which provide an overview of our Emergency Management Team (EMT) members along with their roles and responsibilities.
- In summary, the EMT is responsible for coordinating the university’s preparedness, response, recovery, and continuity efforts before, during, and after emergencies or disasters affecting campus operations, students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Additionally, the team develops recommendations that are submitted to the University President for review, consideration, and approval.
Who is in charge of it?
- The University President has the final decision on all recommendations and decisions made for the University. The Chief of Police, in conjunction with the Emergency Manager and the Emergency Management Team, oversees team coordination.
- Non-Emergency
What is the name of NSU’s alert system?
- RAVE Mass Notification Alert system.
NSU Alerts
NSU Alerts uses the RAVE Mobile Safety system to provide official emergency notifications and essential information to the campus community. As a measure to best reach the NSU community during incidents and emergencies, all current faculty, staff, and students are automatically registered with their NSU emails in the NSU Alerts system. *
NSU Safe
- As an additional resource to promote safety in our campus community, NSUPD has also deployed NSU Safe, the University's custom mobile safety app. NSU Safe is available for download on both the Apple App Store and Google Play.
- The app is packed with features to enhance awareness and provide real-time safety resources at your fingertips. Such features include mobile blue light, friend walk, Report a Tip, and more. In addition to safety features native to NSU Safe, the app also integrates with NSU Alerts, the University's emergency notification platform, as an additional means to receive important incident and emergency information via push notifications.
A Campus-wide Deployment of the Alertus Desktop Emergency Notification System
- The Campus Police Department has deployed the Alertus Desktop System, an enhancement to our emergency notification modalities. The system allows preset emergency notifications to be deployed via desktop override to computer desktop screens across campus in just seconds with the push of an activation button.
- This upgrade expands upon the current RAVE notification modes, including voice, text, email, and the NSU Safe app. An example of the emergency desktop notification is attached.
