Coach Robert Jones has become one of Norfolk State University’s most defining athletic leaders—an architect of excellence whose influence reaches far beyond the hardwood. As the long‑serving head coach of NSU men’s basketball, Jones has guided the Spartans through their most successful stretch in the Division I era, securing over 230 career victories, multiple MEAC Tournament championships, and five MEAC Regular Season titles. His teams’ achievements include historic postseason moments such as the program’s first nonconference postseason championship in Division I, a thrilling victory in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament.
Jones’ leadership has consistently earned national recognition. He is a three‑time MEAC Coach of the Year tand has been a finalist for respected honors including the Hugh Durham Award, the Ben Jobe Award, and the Skip Prosser Man of the Year Award. In 2025, he was selected to receive the prestigious Eddie Robinson Award, underscoring not only his coaching excellence but also his profound impact on athletes and the broader sports community.
Yet what truly distinguishes Coach Jones is his commitment to developing young people and elevating conversations that matter. Beyond wins and banners, he continues to serve as an educator and leader—mentoring student‑athletes, advocating for equity in athletics, and engaging thoughtfully in public dialogue around race, culture, and social issues.
