Nat Warren ’69

Nathaniel “Nat” Warren stands among Norfolk State University’s most influential athletic figures, a trailblazing coach whose vision, dedication, and unwavering belief in Spartan excellence transformed NSU tennis into a powerhouse.

For more than two decades, Warren shaped both the men’s and women’s tennis programs, first as their founding head coach and later as a trusted assistant mentor. He launched the men’s program in 1992 and the women’s in 1994, building both from the ground up and guiding them to national and conference success.

Across 17 seasons with the men’s team and 15 with the women’s, Warren amassed an extraordinary 402–216 career record, leading NSU to conference championships, NCAA tournament appearances, and numerous individual player honors. His leadership brought home back‑to‑back CIAA titles in 1996 and 1997 and propelled the program’s successful transition from Division II to Division I competition.

But Warren’s legacy is about more than wins and titles. Known for his innovative approach to fundraising and international recruitment, he expanded NSU’s reach by attracting talented players from across the U.S., Africa, Europe, and Latin America—an achievement that reshaped the trajectory of the program and elevated NSU’s national profile.

In recognition of his unparalleled contributions, Norfolk State University dedicated the Nat Warren Tennis Center in his honor—an enduring testament to a coach who built champions, opportunities, and community. Coach Warren’s impact continues to echo through every athlete he mentored and every court he helped bring to life.
