Maia Chaka has established herself as a groundbreaking figure in American football, earning national recognition for her historic achievements on the field. In 2021, she became the first Black woman to serve as an on‑field official in the National Football League, marking a transformative moment in the league’s history. Her path to the NFL was built on years of dedicated officiating across high school, collegiate, and professional development programs, including Conference USA, the Pac‑12, and the NFL’s Officiating Development Program. Chaka’s journey is deeply connected to Norfolk State University (NSU), where she graduated in 2006 with a degree in Health, Physical Education, and Exercise Science. During her time at NSU, she was actively involved in academic and professional development communities, including the Teacher’s Certification Program and the HP&E Majors Club. She served as a health and physical education teacher in Virginia Beach and founded programs such as G.E.M.S. and Make Meaningful Change, which empower young people and promote educational enrichment.
