Leon H. Carter
Leon H. Carter, a graduate from the Mass Communications Department of Norfolk State University and the Editor at Large at The Athletic, is a trailblazing figure in sports journalism who has transformed the field by mentoring future generations of writers and fostering diversity in the newsroom.
His remarkable journey in journalism began at Norfolk State University, where he wrote and edited for the Spartan Echo, the student newspaper. It was at NSU that Carter found his voice and his purpose. He credits the faculty encouragement he received as pivotal in helping him secure his first internship at The Virginian-Pilot—an opportunity that propelled him into the national journalism arena.
Carter’s professional rise quickly gained momentum, with impactful roles at the Louisville Courier-Journal, Newsday, the New York Daily News, and ESPN and ultimately The Athletic, earning accolades and prizes for journalism at each turn.
His early experience at Norfolk State not only strengthened his craft but also rooted him in a mission that would define his entire career: expanding opportunity and increasing diversity within sports media.
His editorial leadership helped the organizations where he worked elevate their coverage, expand their reach, and diversify their talent pools.
Yet, Carter’s impact extends far beyond newsroom leadership—he is a visionary who changed the pipeline into journalism. In 1992, he co‑founded the Sports Journalism Institute (SJI) at Norfolk State alongside Sandy Rosenbush, launching a program designed to diversify America’s newsrooms and elevate opportunities for women and journalists of color. Over 400 SJI graduates have now entered the industry, many rising to prominent national positions. In addition, in the fall of 2024, The Athletic launched the Leon H. Carter Newsroom Internship Program.
From his formative years at Norfolk State to his national leadership, Leon Carter has remained a tireless mentor, a champion of diversity, and a trailblazer whose legacy continues to shape the future of sports journalism.
