Larry Vickers
For nearly two decades, Larry Vickers shaped the fabric of Norfolk State University basketball—first as a player, then as a men’s coach, and ultimately as the most accomplished head coach in the history of NSU women’s basketball. His journey began as a walk-on for the Spartan men’s team in 2004–05, where his defensive intensity earned respect and early playing time. After graduating, Vickers transitioned seamlessly into coaching, spending eight seasons as an assistant and associate head coach for the NSU men’s program, laying the foundation for his future leadership.
In 2016, Vickers assumed leadership of the women’s basketball program—first as interim coach, and soon after as the permanent head coach. What followed was a historic transformation. Over nine full seasons, he amassed a remarkable 177–99 record, including a dominant 97–41 mark in MEAC play. Under his guidance, the Spartans captured three consecutive MEAC Tournament Championships (2023–2025) and four straight regular‑season titles (2022–2025), elevating Norfolk State to national prominence and securing multiple NCAA Tournament appearances.
Vickers built more than winning teams—he built a culture. His leadership produced All‑MEAC talent, national coaching honors, and the program’s first-ever ranking in the CollegeInsider Mid‑Major Top 25, reaching No. 4. His 2024–25 squad shattered records with a 30–5 season, a perfect 14–0 conference run, and victories over SEC programs, including Auburn—a poetic foreshadowing of the next chapter.
In March 2025, after guiding NSU to unparalleled heights, Vickers accepted the position of head women’s basketball coach at Auburn University, carrying Spartan excellence to the national stage.
Larry Vickers leaves behind an extraordinary legacy at Norfolk State—one defined by resilience, transformation, and championship standards.
