James Staton

James Staton is a true innovator for Norfolk State University. On a scholarship for vocal music, James Staton enrolled in Virginia State College's Norfolk Division in 1955 and majored in drums for the band. Following graduation, he worked as a teacher at Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk and was the band, football, and basketball teams' public address announcer. Since joining the Norfolk State band in 1964 as an announcer under John J. Ballou, Staton collaborated with most of the school's band directors. He noted that the band's heyday began under Emery Fears in the 1970s and gave Ballou credit for creating the band's basis. In addition, Staton is credited with coining the well-known slogan "Behold, the Green and Gold." This came about as a result of the band's outstanding performance and the enthusiastic response from the audience when they took the field. Rather than merely introducing the band, he felt compelled to say something that resonated with them. Justice—something that symbolized fear to the enemy and awe to the dedicated fans. While driving down. Furthermore, the original chant that stated, "To friend and foe alike within the sound of my voice, Give ear to what I say here. Behold, the Spartan Legion as they pass and review. They sound the call to battle. The challenge is accepted by few. For the coming victory is foretold. Behold, Behold, the mighty Green and Gold.”
