Ella Ward is a prominent female figure in politics. Dr. Ella P. Ward was elected to the Chesapeake City Council for the first time in May 2006. She was re-elected in 2010, 2014, and 2018. In 2000, she was elected to the Chesapeake School Board, and in 2004, she was re-elected for a second four-year term. Governor Mark Warner appointed Dr. Ward to the Virginia Board of Education in January 2003 for a four-year term, and Governor Tim Kaine reappointed him in January 2007 for an additional four-year term. On February 15, 2006, she was elected vice president of the Virginia Board of Education for the first time. She was re-elected for four terms in a row.

Additionally, Dr. Ward holds five degrees: a Master of Science in Educational Administration from ODU, a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Communications from NSU, and a Doctorate in Educational Administration and Supervision from Virginia Tech. The YWCA Women of Distinction Award, EFM Martin Luther King, Jr. Leadership Award, Zeta Phi Beta Finer Womanhood Award, Old Dominion University Outstanding Alumnus Award, East Suffolk High School Outstanding Alumnus Award, Girls' Inc.'s "Strong, Smart, Bold Women" Award, Delta Dream Maker Award, Camelot Community Service Award, Dunedin Civic League Community Service Award, Delicados Outstanding Teacher Award, and many more.
