Curtis Bunn
Curtis Bunn is a groundbreaking author whose storytelling has left a lasting impact on Norfolk State University and beyond. In 2001, he moved from his award‑winning career as a sports journalist in Washington, D.C., New York, and Atlanta to become a full‑time novelist. Since then, Bunn has crafted in‑depth, witty, perceptive and intelligent stories that have captivated readers and book clubs across the country.
Bunn, a 1983 Norfolk State University graduate, was so struck by the acclaim that local book clubs contributed to the success of his first novel, Baggage Check, that he founded the National Book Club Conference in 2003. The conference has evolved into one of the most prestigious annual literary gatherings supporting African American writers and readers. Bunn, who was a recipient of NSU's Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2014, has also been named to Black Issues Book Review Magazine's Power List. After the success of the book club conference, Bunn expanded to found the National Youth Book Club, which hosts one-day conferences in schools with a goal of reinforcing the power of reading to youths.
As an author, his body of work includes 10 novels—ranging from the Essence No. 1 bestseller Baggage Check to the more recent Welcome to my World.
Bunn taught journalism as both a guest speaker and adjunct professor at Morehouse College, served as the deputy editor of AtlantaBlackStar.com, one of the leading digital platforms for African American news; and has been a journalist at NBC News BLK.
