Tamara A. Jones, MD, FHM is a distinguished leader in hospital medicine, recognized for her commitment to excellence, mentorship, and community service.  She is a 1996 graduate in chemistry from Norfolk State University as a Dozoretz National Institute for Mathematics and Applied Sciences (DNIMAS) scholar.  She continued on to receive her Masters in Chemistry from UNC-Chapel Hill. She earned her Doctorate in Medicine and completed residency training at Eastern Virginia Medical School. During this time, she became the first African American president of the graduating class in the school’s history.  She received awards for her academic excellence, unselfish concern for others and outstanding resident during training. Dr. Jones has previously served as Assistant Professor and lead hospitalist at EVMS, which also included an appointment as Chief of the Department of Medicine – Sentara Hospitals Norfolk for three years.  Dr. Jones’s leadership continued while employed at Atrium Health upon her transition to Charlotte, NC as Vice Chair of the Department of Medicine and site director for the Carolinas Hospitalist Group - Cabarrus. She is currently employed by CaroMont Medical Group within the Charlotte-metro region as a board-certified physician of Internal Medicine with a focused practice in Hospital Medicine and serves as a member of the Medical Executive Committee.

In addition to her medical career, Dr. Jones has been recognized for her excellence to include being a Top Forty Under 40 recipient by Hampton Roads Inside Business, a recipient of multiple awards for her community service and engagement, served on the EVMS M.D. Alumni Board and as board president of Twenty Pearls Inc.  She has represented NSU as a recipient of the MEAC Distinguished Alumnus Award, the G.O.L.D. Award, and the Distinguished Alumni Award.  Furthermore, she is a 2023 inductee into both the Emerald Society and the Lyman Beecher Brooks Society, which honor her total lifetime giving to the University. She has established a book scholarship fund at the University and recently initiated the Jones Legacy Endowed Scholarship Fund. Dr. Jones is a lifetime member of the NSU Alumni Association, has served on the NSU Board of Visitors and is a current member on the NSU Foundation Board. She holds membership in several professional organizations to include Fellow of the Society of Hospital Medicine (FHM), American College of Physicians, and the National Medical Association. She is an active member of The Links Inc. and a lifetime member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Dr. Jones is passionate about mentoring minority students and residents, inspiring the next generation of medical professionals.
