Mr. Spartan
The title “Mr. Spartan” at Norfolk State University originally referred to the drum major of the Spartan Legion Marching Band. The first person to hold this title was Ronnie Argentine Joyner, who became the inaugural “Mr. Spartan” during his time as drum major at Norfolk State College (now Norfolk State University) in the 1970s. Joyner was celebrated for his leadership and showmanship, which helped elevate the band’s reputation nationally. His legacy is remembered as a defining moment for the Spartan Legion and the university’s spirit traditions.
