
Michael D. Rochelle
Retired Lt. Gen. Michael D. Rochelle is widely recognized for his exceptional 35‑year career in the United States Army and his lasting impact on military personnel management and leadership development. Rising to the position of Deputy Chief of Staff, G‑1, Rochelle served as the Army’s senior human resources officer, overseeing personnel operations for more than one million soldiers—an accomplishment that placed him at the helm of one of the most critical functions in the Army.
Throughout his military career, Rochelle held several key command positions that showcased his leadership and operational expertise. He commanded the U.S. Army Recruiting Command, the U.S. Army Soldier Support Institute, and the U.S. Army Garrison at Fort Monroe, among others—each role contributing to modernization and effectiveness in recruiting, training, and soldier support operations. His senior staff assignments included serving as Senior Military Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of Defense and managing high‑level personnel strategy at the Pentagon.
By the time of his retirement, General Rochelle had won the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Barrier Breaker Award, been recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus from Norfolk State University, and been inducted into the Boys and Girls Club of America Hall of Fame for his service in the U.S. Army's Installation Management Agency.
After retiring in 2009, Rochelle continued his legacy of service by founding MDR Strategies, LLC, an executive coaching and leadership development firm advising corporate, government, academic, and nonprofit leaders worldwide. His work in leadership coaching has earned recognition across industries, reflecting the same dedication and excellence that defined his military service.
