
Dr. Howard G. Adams (B.S. ’64)
Founder and CEO of H.G. Adams & Associates, Inc., Dr. Howard G. Adams is a nationally recognized consultant, trainer, and mentor based in Norfolk, Virginia. His firm has served major corporations, including General Motors, NCR, and Intel, as well as government agencies such as NASA, the U.S. Marine Corps, and the Department of Energy. Dr. Adams has delivered keynote addresses, seminars, and workshops at more than 650 colleges and universities nationwide, earning acclaim for his dynamic and engaging presentation style.
Dr. Adams’ impact on Norfolk State University (NSU) is profound. In 1970, he became NSU’s first Director of Alumni Affairs and later served as Vice President of Student Affairs during a pivotal era when the university fought to remain an independent, historically Black college. Under his leadership, the alumni association drafted and presented a resolution to state and national officials affirming NSU’s independence—a critical step in securing the institution’s future.
His contributions extend beyond NSU. In 1989, President Ronald Reagan appointed him to the U.S. Congressional Task Force on Women, Minorities, and Individuals with Disabilities in Science and Technology. In 1995, President Bill Clinton honored him with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering, as well as for Mentoring. Dr. Adams has received numerous accolades, including the Golden Torch Award for Lifetime Achievement in Academia and recognition as a “20th Century Outstanding Educator.”
He remains celebrated for his work in STEM education and mentoring, leaving an enduring legacy at Norfolk State and beyond.
