Fran and Chester Steward exemplify unwavering dedication, selfless service, and enduring commitment to Norfolk State University and its student‑athletes. For more than two decades, the Stewards have been pillars of the Norfolk State Athletics Foundation (NSUAF), championing opportunities that empower Spartans to excel both academically and athletically. Long before assuming formal leadership roles, their passion for student success guided their involvement, rooted in a deep belief that athletics and academics must advance together.
Their work has been particularly transformative. Serving as NSUAF President from 2004 to 2014 and now as Chief Membership Recruiter and Executive Director, Fran Steward has helped shape the foundation’s growth, visibility, and impact. Together with Chester and members of NSUAF, she has worked tirelessly to strengthen the infrastructure that supports student‑athletes—from scholarships and equipment to facility enhancements and essential services. Founded in 1980, the NSUAF’s mission is to provide critical funding that promotes excellence across Norfolk State’s intercollegiate athletics program. Through steadfast stewardship and community engagement, the Foundation has made significant donations in support of student-athletes and the Athletics Department.
