Reporting Hazing

Reporting Hazing

Norfolk State University prohibits hazing and is committed to a community where students can participate, connect, and belong without experiencing harm.

Student Accountability & Restorative Initiatives (SARI), within the Dean of Students Office, works with the NSU Police Department and campus partners to investigate reports involving students and student organizations and address alleged violations through the Code of Student Conduct. This includes concerns involving recognized organizations and groups not formally recognized by the University.

You do not need to determine whether an activity meets the definition of hazing before reporting it. Report the concern and provide the information available to you.

How to Report

If someone is in immediate danger or needs urgent medical assistance, call 911 or NSU Police at (757) 823-9000.

University policy requires students, employees, and other University community members to report actual or suspected hazing to NSU Police. For non-emergency reports, call (757) 823-8102.

You may report to the Anonymous Tip Line: (757)-823-2148

You may also submit information through the Student Conduct Incident Report Form. Online reports may be submitted anonymously, although limited information may affect the University’s ability to investigate.

When possible, include:

  • What happened and when and where it occurred.

  • The individuals, organization, or group involved.

  • Any injuries, safety concerns, or ongoing threats.

  • Available messages, photographs, documents, or witness information.

For questions or assistance, contact the Dean of Students Office at deanofstudents@nsu.edu or (757) 823-2152.

Protection Against Retaliation

Retaliation against someone for reporting hazing or participating in an investigation or conduct proceeding is prohibited. Report any concerns about retaliation promptly.

Adam’s Law: Prevention and Reporting Protections

Virginia’s Adam’s Law requires:

  • In-person prevention education for current, new, and potential new members of covered student organizations and their advisors.

  • Disciplinary immunity in qualifying circumstances for bystanders who are not involved in the hazing and make a good-faith report before or during an incident that causes or is likely to cause injury. The protection covers disciplinary action based on hazing or personal consumption of drugs or alcohol disclosed with that report.

  • Investigation of alleged hazing through the institution’s disciplinary process.

  • Public reporting of qualifying hazing findings.

The University’s conduct process does not replace the criminal legal process.

Students reporting hazing or bullying related to a hazing report will receive information about available campus mental and behavioral health support.

Hazing Transparency

View the NSU Campus Hazing Transparency Report for published findings involving student organizations. A report of suspected hazing is an allegation and does not, by itself, establish responsibility.
