The Computer Science Program at Norfolk State University is designed to provide students with an exposure to the broad Computer Science spectrum, with an opportunity to create areas of specialization with appropriate applied mathematics and/or computer electives. Generally, the program emphasizes the practical and theoretical aspects of Computer Science and related areas of Computer Science and prepares students for careers as Computer Software Engineers, System Analysts and other professions. The program also provides an adequate foundation for students who wish to pursue graduate study in Computer Science.


Programs

Formed in 1990, the Norfolk State University Computer Science Department is designed to provide students with fundamental training in the theoretical and practical aspects of computer science. The department offers a general computer science degree and tracks in Cybersecurity, Software Engineering and Computer Engineering. In 2003, the program was expanded to include a Master of Science degree in Computer Science. In fall 2012, the department added a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology for students who sought hands-on and practical knowledge. Beginning fall 2015, we launched an online Master of Science in Cybersecurity. This wide range of options gives students the opportunity to pursue studies in Cybersecurity, Robotics, Software Engineering, Computer Networking and Web Design and Development. The department has 17 full-time faculty members, 15  hold doctorate degrees.

The Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science at Norfolk State University is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET, https://www.abet.org, under the General Criteria and the Computer Science Program Criteria.
