Norfolk State University Counseling Center is here for you while you adjust to the new normal caused by COVID-19. We are sensitive to the impact that current stressors and multiple unexpected changes could have on your sense of wellbeing and we will continue to be committed to providing supportive services for you.
Counseling and Crisis Services:
We provide virtual services, via a HIPPA compliant video-conferencing platform. Services will include individual counseling, workshops, crisis intervention, and consultation. To schedule an appointment contact us at (757) 823-8173.
As always, crisis services for after business hours and weekends are available by calling (757) 823-8102 if you are physically located in the state of Virginia and the National Suicide Hotline at 1-800-273-8255 if you are physically located outside of Virginia. *For a life-threatening emergency, call 911 right away.
*Based on professional ethics and state laws, Norfolk State University clinicians will not be able to provide counseling services to students that are physically located outside of Virginia.
Finding a Therapist at Home:
For students that are physically located outside of Virginia we recommend you to find a therapist in your area. You can obtain referrals by visiting Psychology Today’s website or by calling the number on the back of your insurance card.

How You Can Refer a Student To The Counseling Center
If you have a student that you feel is a threat to themselves or others, we ask that you call the Counseling Center at (757) 823-8173 (during business hours) or NSU Police Department non-emergency at (757) 823-8102 (after business hours/weekends) for consultation.
If you have a student you feel may need our services (not a threat to themselves or others), you can refer them to call the Counseling Center at 757-823-8173 and/or visit the Counseling Center website https://www.nsu.edu/counselingcenter/counseling for additional resources.
If you need to consult on a student, please call the Counseling Center at (757) 823-8173 Monday-Friday 8am-5pm or you can email our office at counselingcenter@nsu.edu However, if you need to consult after business hours, contact NSU Police Department non-emergency number (757) 823-8102 and they will connect you to a counselor in the Counseling Center.
