Dr. Tony Atwater

Dr. Tony Atwater is an accomplished media professional and distinguished academic leader who served as the fifth president of Norfolk State University from 2011 to 2013. During his presidency, he championed a vision of academic excellence and institutional modernization, acting as a strong ambassador and advocate for the University.

Under his leadership, NSU introduced new academic programs—including a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology and a graduate research program—expanding the University’s academic footprint and strengthening its commitment to innovation.

Dr. Atwater also oversaw major campus enhancements, including the opening of a new library and a student services building. Dedicated to improving accessibility, he implemented the no‑cost “Ride the Tide” transportation initiative for students, faculty, and staff. He guided NSU through a comprehensive six‑year strategic plan focused on campus modernization, security, and long‑term growth, and facilitated the acquisition of State Senator Yvonne Miller’s legislative papers, enriching NSU’s archival resources.

Prior to his presidency at NSU, Dr. Atwater served as president of Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He currently serves as a tenured professor in NSU’s Department of Mass Communications and Journalism.

His academic achievements include a Ph.D. in communication research from Michigan State University, postdoctoral studies at the University of Michigan, and multiple credentials from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
