His journey began as a standout student-athlete in the 1960s, where he became the first Spartan baseball player to earn NCAA College Division All-American honors. A two-time All-CIAA selection, Miller led the nation in doubles in 1968 and consistently batted over .400, setting the stage for a lifetime of achievement. After graduating with a mathematics degree in 1969 and serving as a U.S. Army officer, he signed a professional contract with the Minnesota Twins.

Under his leadership, the Spartans captured 17 CIAA championships, made 12 NCAA/NAIA postseason appearances, and produced 22 professional players. His 718 career wins remain the most in CIAA history, earning him 15 CIAA Coach of the Year awards and induction into multiple Halls of Fame. In 1997, NSU honored his contributions by naming its baseball facility the Marty L. Miller Baseball Field.

Miller’s influence extends far beyond the diamond. As NSU’s longest-serving Athletics Director (2004–2020), he transformed the university’s athletic landscape. He spearheaded major facility upgrades, including synthetic turf at Dick Price Stadium, new video boards, renovated weight rooms, and enhanced softball and tennis complexes. His commitment to academic excellence led NSU student-athletes to achieve record GPAs, while his leadership secured 11 Talmadge Layman Hill Awards for overall athletic success.

Inducted into 12 Halls of Fame, including the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Marty L. Miller’s legacy is one of vision, dedication, and Spartan pride. His life’s work exemplifies the power of perseverance and the transformative impact of leadership. Norfolk State University will forever celebrate Marty L.
