Dr. Carolyn Meyers

Dr. Carolyn Meyers, the fourth President of Norfolk State University, had a steadfast commitment to academic excellence. During her tenure, NSU achieved reaffirmation of accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and earned national disciplinary accreditations in business, teacher education, and engineering. The university also received full NCAA certification, reinforcing its reputation for integrity and quality.

Under Dr. Meyers’ direction, NSU experienced a surge in student success. Freshman enrollment rose by 19 percent in a single year, while tuition remained stable over three years. Her campus-wide focus on retention improved student persistence, and she launched hallmark initiatives. She championed academic innovation, overseeing the creation of doctoral programs in materials science and engineering, as well as social work, and an online bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies.

Dr. Meyers also prioritized strategic planning, establishing the SPARC council to define NSU’s vision and core values. Her leadership secured funding for iconic campus structures, including the communications tower and library, and positioned NSU as a military-friendly institution. A distinguished scholar, Dr. Meyers earned degrees from Howard University and Georgia Tech, completed postdoctoral studies at Harvard, and garnered national recognition for her contributions to STEM education.
