Dr. Carl Wheatley Haywood ’71
Dr. Carl W. Haywood is the proud author and composer of Norfolk State University’s Alma Mater, a cherished ode sung at campus events by students, alumni, and friends. Personally sought out by NSU’s first president, Dr. Lyman Beecher Brooks, Haywood created a musical tradition that continues to unite the Spartan community.
For nearly 50 years, Dr. Haywood served Norfolk State as professor of music, director of choral activities, and mentor to generations of students. He conducted the NSU Concert Choir and Spartan Chorale, which represented the university nationally through performances at churches, universities, and major venues. In a career highlight, the NSU Concert Choir was invited twice to perform at the White House for President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.
Dr. Haywood earned advanced degrees in sacred music and choral conducting from Southern Methodist University and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Southern California. His influence extends beyond NSU into the Episcopal Church, where he served as editor and contributor to the African American hymnal Lift Every Voice and Sing and other denominational hymnals. His compositions are featured in numerous hymnals across faith traditions.
A respected clinician, adjudicator, and guest conductor, Dr. Haywood has received awards from Norfolk State University, the NAACP, and the National Association of Negro Musicians for his cultural and musical contributions. His legacy as a composer, educator, and leader continues to resonate at Norfolk State and in communities nationwide.
