
Hon. Candi Mundon King
Norfolk State University alumna Candi Mundon King has carved an extraordinary path in Virginia politics, culminating in her appointment by Governor Abigail Spanberger as Secretary of the Commonwealth. In this pivotal role, she oversees constituent services, appointments, extraditions, restoration of rights, executive clemency, and serves as a liaison to Virginia’s recognized Native American tribes—responsibilities that underscore her commitment to inclusive governance.
Governor Spanberger praised Mundon King for her ability to bring people together, achieve results, and demonstrate unwavering dedication and courage. These qualities have defined her tenure since 2021 as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, representing the 23rd District. As Chair of the House Committee on Counties, Cities, and Towns, Vice Chair of Public Safety, and member of key finance and commerce committees, she has championed transformative legislation. Her accomplishments include securing teacher pay raises, protecting victims of human trafficking, expanding paid sick leave for home health workers, and safeguarding renters’ rights. Most notably, she authored the Virginia MOMnibus, revolutionizing maternal healthcare across the Commonwealth, and founded both the Sickle Cell Caucus and the Black Maternal Health Caucus.
Born and raised in Portsmouth, Virginia, Mundon King earned her degree in Political Science from Norfolk State University and began her career advocating for Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Her leadership has secured millions in educational funding, launched community initiatives like the Prince William Back-to-School Day, and created internship programs to empower future leaders.
