New Student Orientation

The mission of the Office of New Student Orientation is to assist newly-entering students in their transition to the University.  Through a collaborative, empowering, and comprehensive institutional effort, students and parents are able to holistically address academic, financial, and social needs while preparing for enrollment.

Congratulations on your decision to become a part of the NSU Spartan Family! We look forward to meeting and working with you to achieve your educational goals. After being admitted to the University, your next step is to attend one of the New Student Orientation sessions for undergraduate students. The earlier you begin this process of advising, class selection and registration the better.

All students scheduled to attend New Student Orientation must have already set-up their Norfolk State University MyNSU e-mail account prior to attending their registered session. Your orientation module access information will only be sent to your student email account. Course registration will be completed as a part of the orientation. 

COVID-19 Orientation Update 

Norfolk State University is actively monitoring the outbreak of respiratory illness caused by a novel (new) coronavirus (termed “COVID-19”). Very rapidly, the virus has been detected in numerous countries including the United States.  At this time, there are confirmed cases in the State of Virginia. The University has moved to an online environment beginning March 16, 2020.

What does this mean for New Student Orientation?

Our office is keeping a close eye on this ever-changing situation. On April 21st, the university determined that the best course of action would be to move our summer orientation process online. This decision was not made lightly, but out of caution and safety for both the NSU community, as well as our new incoming students and their families. Until further notice, New Student Orientation Sessions will be held virtually.

During this time, we will be making a number of updates to our website. We encourage you to continue checking our site for updates.

Are you ready for your New Student Orientation? If not, it's time to get ready. Access information for your Virtual New Student Orientation Modules will be sent to your Spartan email account. The information will be sent to students based upon their registered new student orientation date.

New Student Orientation Fees

All new undergraduate students are assessed a mandatory one-time, non-refundable New Student Enrollment Deposit and Orientation Fee of $200 for their first semester of enrollment. These fees include student attendance to Norfolk State University, programming for new students, AGOGE Week activities, resources, placement exams and university publications. 

Orientation Registration

Fall 2021 Students Note:

Registration for New Student Orientation is available for students that have paid both the orientation and enrollment fees. Visit to register for the online zoom sessions to start the New Student Orientation process. 

Course registration is a part of New Student Orientation and you will communicate with an advisor after completion of your Virtual New Student Orientation Modules. Access to the modules will be sent to your MyNSU email. 

  • Prior to having access to the online zoom session orientation registration link, the non-refundable $100 enrollment deposit and $100 orientation fee must be paid. Orientation is required for all incoming freshmen and transfer students. (summer and mini-term sessions are excluded)
  • If a student experiences trouble paying online, payments are also accepted by calling Norfolk State University's Cashier Office at 757-823-8545.
  • Incoming Freshman and Transfer Students that request a change of major or minor, should contact the Office of New Student Orientation for the Incoming Student Change of Major form by emailing
