Summer Bridge Program

Summer Bridge

The Students Preparing for Academic Rigor in College (SPARC) Summer Bridge Program is a free, four-week residential experience designed to help incoming first-year students make a successful transition to college. Through a combination of rigorous academic coursework, peer mentoring, engaging workshops, and enrichment activities, SPARC prepares students to thrive academically, personally, and socially at Norfolk State University.

Participants have the opportunity to earn college credits while developing the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to navigate the college experience successfully. Throughout the program, students are supported by trained peer mentors who help them acclimate to campus life, build meaningful connections, and become familiar with the people, resources, and services available to support their success.

SPARC combines college-level coursework with intentional academic support designed to strengthen students’ readiness for the demands of higher education. Students participate in Academic Workshop and Enrichment (AWEsome) sessions, which provide supplemental instruction, study strategies, academic skill-building, and opportunities to reinforce concepts introduced in the classroom.

Students also participate in Spartan Speaks, a series of interactive general assemblies featuring campus offices, university leaders, and community partners. These sessions introduce students to essential resources and services, including academic advising, counseling and wellness services, financial aid, career services, student support programs, and other campus resources. The program also welcomes guest speakers and workshop facilitators who provide students with valuable perspectives, practical knowledge, and inspiration for their college journey.

SPARC recognizes that student success extends beyond academics. The program provides opportunities for students to develop relationships, explore their interests, strengthen their leadership skills, and become engaged members of the Spartan community.

Enrichment experiences include:

  • Community-Building Cookout – An opportunity for students to connect with their peers, mentors, faculty, and staff in a welcoming environment.

  • Networking & Etiquette Luncheon – Hosted in partnership with Career Services, this experience introduces students to professional networking, workplace etiquette, communication skills, and career preparation.

  • Cultural Immersion Experience – An opportunity for students to broaden their perspectives and engage with cultural experiences beyond the classroom.

  • Community Service Project – Students participate in service activities that encourage civic engagement, social responsibility, and a commitment to giving back to the community.

  • Health & Wellness Initiative – Interactive programming promotes healthy habits, wellness awareness, and the importance of maintaining balance throughout the college experience.

SPARC is more than a summer program; it is an opportunity to build a strong foundation for college success. By combining academic preparation, mentorship, professional development, wellness, community engagement, and meaningful connections, SPARC empowers incoming students to enter Norfolk State University with greater confidence, a stronger sense of belonging, and the tools they need to succeed.
