Family Relations

Our Mission

At Norfolk State University, we recognize that families play an important role in a student's educational journey. The Office of Student Advocacy and Family Relations is committed to building meaningful partnerships with parents, families, and supporters by providing information, resources, and guidance that promote student success.

While students are responsible for managing their own educational experience, we understand that families often serve as an important source of encouragement and support. Our office is here to help families navigate University resources, understand available services, and identify the appropriate campus offices to address questions or concerns.

our commitment to families

We are committed to fostering positive relationships between the University and the families of our students by:

  • Providing information about University resources and services.
  • Connecting families with the appropriate campus offices.
  • Offering guidance on University policies and procedures.
  • Promoting family engagement through educational programs and outreach.
  • Supporting students by encouraging family involvement that respects student privacy and independence.

Partnering for student success

Families are valuable partners in helping students thrive both inside and outside the classroom. The Office of Student Advocacy and Family Relations is available to answer general questions, connect families with campus resources, and provide guidance on University processes. When students experience personal or non-academic challenges, we work with families and campus partners to help identify available support while encouraging students to take an active role in resolving their concerns.

Families can support their student's success by:

  • Encouraging regular communication.
  • Promoting personal responsibility and independence.
  • Reminding students to seek help early when challenges arise.
  • Encouraging involvement in campus organizations and activities.
  • Supporting healthy academic, social, and personal well-being.
  • Contacting our office when guidance or referrals to University resources are needed.

student privacy

Norfolk State University is committed to protecting student privacy. In accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the University cannot disclose a student's educational records to parents, family members, or other third parties without the student's written consent through a completed Student Records Release Form, except as otherwise permitted by law.

Although there may be times when we are unable to discuss specific student information, we are always happy to provide general guidance, explain University processes, and connect families with appropriate resources.
