Parents

Admission

Admission to the program is open to faculty, staff, students, and community families. Parents interested in enrolling their child in the Preschool Academy must complete all forms in the registration packet and submit them to the Preschool Academy. Admission is based on the availability of space, age, and developmental readiness. Parents will be contacted when a space becomes available for their child and will be given a 72-hour window to accept or decline admission.

ENROLLMENT PRIORITIES

When a spot opens, we will consult the waiting list for children who are the appropriate age for the classroom. We will offer the spot to the child who has been on the list the longest, using the following priorities:

  1. Sibling of current student at the NSU Preschool Academy
  2. NSU faculty or staff
  3. NSU full-time student or alumni
  4. Community at large

Tuition and Fees

The Norfolk State University Preschool Academy operates primarily from the funds generated by the tuition paid by the families enrolled. It is therefore imperative that all fees are paid in full and on time.  The program operates 11 months, from September through July, which includes the Summer Session during June and July.

Tuition is payable in eleven (11) payments of $600.00 for full-time and $400.00 for part-time each month.  Employees of Norfolk State University submit payment directly to the Cashier's office.

If a parent submits payment directly to the NSU Cashier’s Office, a copy of the receipt must be presented to the preschool office. All checks should be made out to NSU Preschool Academy. The University charges $50.00 for all returned checks, and the University will not accept personal checks if one or more checks are returned.

The activity fee for the Fall/Spring semesters is $85.00 per child and is due in September. A summer activity fee of $90.00 per child is required in May for children enrolled in the summer session.

Tuition is due on the first school day of each month. The parent/guardian will be notified of the past due amount after the five-day grace period. If payment has not been submitted after the five-day grace period, the late fee of $40.00 will be applied to the tuition. Failure to submit the overdue payment may result in exclusion from the program.

Parent Group

The Preschool Academy and families work closely in partnership to ensure high-quality care and education for children. Parents are welcome to visit and are encouraged to be involved in the program.

Our Parent Group plays a vital role in the decision-making process as it pertains to school improvement. Our Parent Group consists of elected officers: President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. The Parent Group participates in various University programs and special events. The Parent Group also conducts several fundraising projects to enhance the Preschool Academy's Philosophy of Education. We are appreciative of the Parent Group and their involvement and commitment to quality early education and care.

Parent Volunteers

Volunteers in the school are encouraged and welcomed. Activities in which volunteers have been involved include the following:

  1. Assisting with educational field trips
  2. Assisting in special activities or programs such as plays, holiday observances, school parties, Week of the Young Child and Homecoming
  3. Serving as a resource person by sharing special skills, talents, and interests
  4. Assisting teachers by making materials to be used in the classroom

To volunteer, please call the administrative office at (757) 823-8111.

The Preschool Academy promotes an “Open Door” policy. We welcome parent/guardian visits at any time and encourage parent involvement.
