Office of Extended Learning

The Office of Extended Learning (OEL) provides services and support to faculty and students in support of online programs and learning tools. The OEL team partners with faculty to develop online degree and certificate programs and create master course templates. Norfolk State University belongs to the United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA) to provide robust faculty online certification, Quality Matters (QM) to ensure compliance and quality assurance within online instructional courses, and NC-SARA to ensure students receive consistent distance learning support and offerings as other students across the nation.

Additional support is provided with a suite of e-learning tools and services used by faculty and students to include the below. The Office of Extended Learning is also responsible for faculty and student training on e-learning tools and services. Below are the various online and distant learning resources for students and faculty:

  • Adobe Connect Enterprise  Used for large-scale audience webinars with registration and event management features.
  • Adobe Presenter  Convert your boring PowerPoint presentations into engaging eLearning content. Add quizzes, scenarios, and out-of-the-box assets, and publish as HTML5 for access using desktop and mobile browsers. Create high-impact interactive training videos. Track learner performance using leading LMS’s.
  • Adobe Video Express  Create, edit and publish rich, interactive HD videos in just 3 steps. Capture anything on your screen or your webcam feed, or bring in videos from your tablet, phone, or any external source. Mix them any way you want -include quizzes to better engage viewers.
  • Blackboard Mobile Apps  Blackboard Instructor and Blackboard app for students.
  • Blackboard Ally Blackboard Ally is a tool that allows instructors to generate course content into alternative formats such as: OCR'd version (for scanned documents), Tagged PDF, Semantic HTML, Audio, ePub, Electronic Braille,  and Translated Version.
  • Blackboard Learn Online Tutorial Library Students and Faculty can access a range of online tutorials to assist in navigating Blackboard Learn.
  • Dedicated Role-Play Rooms  BMH 218 and BMH 305 are rooms capable of supporting live recording and streaming of role-play and other training/learning events focused on clinical experiences.
  • Learning Management System (LMS) Norfolk State Univeristy offers a number of learning tools and systems to include Blackboard Learn, Blackboard Collaborate, Blackboard Content System, and third party tools.
  • Live Stream Encoding Services Provides live event channels via Medial™ from the NSU BMH Studio and NGE Room 205. NSU Theater and Mobile Streaming (coming soon).
  • My Career Access jobs, internships, and career tools from within Blackboard - powered by Internships.com.
  • Medial™ Media Library Medial™ is the university video hosting platform used to house online program media.
  • Online Text Books and Course Content Wiley Plus, McGraw Hill, Person, and Cengage are all accessible via Blackboard with Associated Publisher Texts.
  • Pearson's MyLab & Mastering Products Available through Blackboard with selected courses, My Labs is the world's leading collections of online homework, tutorial, and assessment content.
  • Respondus Lockdown Browser Respondus Monitor Test integrity tools for proctoring exams, quizzes, and online assessments.
  • SmartThinking 24/7 academic support program that provides you with online access to live, one-to-one assistance from over 1,500 trained and qualified tutors in math, biology, chemistry, physics, economics, accounting, statistics, Spanish, writing, and more.
  • SoftChalk Create/ Cloud SoftChalk Cloud enables educators to create, manage and share their own interactive online learning content, and deliver it anywhere, anytime, on any device. Create activities, quizzes and integrate media to engage the digital learner and improve learning outcomes. SoftChalk seamlessly integrates with Blackboard Learn.
  • Video Collaboration Support OEL supports the operation of several room resources developed expressly for distance learning and remote collaboration. Rooms available are BMH 105, BMH 106, BMH 318, LBB 1040, LBB 1022. Additional rooms are planned for future renovations. Faculty can extend the reach of their on-premise courses to distance learners and leverage remote speakers and partner institutions.
  • Virtual Computing Labs (VCL)  Desktop virtualization server that provides specialized software in the form of Web accessible virtual machines.  Various Windows 7 desktop builds can be customized for student’s use. Currently specialized VM’s running Windows 7 and software such as SPSS, Free CAD, Muse Scope, Avogadro, Adobe Pro, GMetrix, and QUCS Circuit Simulator are available for checkout.
  • Virtual Study Rooms Virtual study rooms can be accessed via Bb Collaborate.
  • 3Play Media  Closed Captioning and translation services + OEL can transcribe or Closed Caption video and audio project of various formats. This service helps the institution address 508 C compliance and learners with certain disabilities.
