Early Childhood/Elementary and Special Education

Early Childhood, Elementary, and Special Education (EESE)

Welcome to the Department of Early Childhood, Elementary and Special Education (EESE) at Norfolk State University. The department’s mission is to prepare competent, compassionate, collaborative, and committed teachers through rigorous curriculum and experiential learning opportunities. We offer undergraduate and graduate degrees that lead to licensure in elementary and special education.  In addition, we offer a non-licensure degree in early childhood education.  Moreover, the faculty in the EESE department participate in on-going research that impact education across the field.

Our programs apply research-based practices combined with critical thinking skills and research to promote best practices for serving diverse students in grades Kindergarten - 12.  Coursework in our programs align with the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (InTASC), Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), and the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) to support optimal learning outcomes for all students in the EESE department.
